What clients really want from their agencies

Agency leaders spend a lot of time thinking about differentiation.

Should we refine our proposition? Focus more on a particular sector? Lead with our specialist expertise? Talk more about our AI capabilities? Expand our service offering?

These are all valid questions. But when you ask clients what matters most, the answers are often far simpler.

The latest What Clients Think Report 2026 from Up to the Light shows that many of the things clients value most have little to do with size, scale or credentials, and much more to do with how agencies show up, communicate and contribute to their clients' success.

_____________

Clients want partners, not suppliers

Perhaps the most significant theme is that clients increasingly want agencies to act as strategic partners rather than simply service providers.

Many client teams are being asked to deliver more with less. As a result, clients are looking for agencies that do more than execute briefs. They want partners who bring fresh thinking, challenge assumptions, provide perspective and help solve real business problems.

The agencies creating the most value are often those willing to have broader commercial conversations, not just creative ones.

Proactivity beats responsiveness

Most agencies pride themselves on being responsive.

The problem is that responsiveness has become the minimum standard.

Clients increasingly expect agencies to be proactive: spotting opportunities, identifying risks and bringing fresh ideas to the table before they're asked. They want partners who are paying attention to their business and thinking ahead, not simply reacting to requests as they arise.

One of the more interesting findings from the What Clients Think Report 2026 is that many clients would actually like their agencies to be more assertive. They don't necessarily want agreement. They value agencies that are prepared to question assumptions and offer a different perspective when it's needed.

In short, clients aren't looking for order takers. They're looking for trusted advisors.

Commercial understanding matters more than ever

Many agencies still lead conversations with capabilities, process and credentials.

Clients, however, are increasingly evaluating agencies through a commercial lens.

Do you understand their market?

Do you understand the pressures they're facing internally?

Can you demonstrate how your work contributes to business outcomes?

Commercial awareness consistently ranks as one of the characteristics that separates valuable agency partners from interchangeable suppliers.

The agencies that win long-term relationships are often those that understand the client's business almost as well as the client does.

Clear positioning still matters

Another recurring theme from the research is that agencies often make it difficult for prospects to understand what makes them different.

Many clients struggle to recall agency positioning or identify a clear point of difference. Generic claims and broad service lists rarely create a memorable impression.

The lesson for agency founders is straightforward: clarity beats complexity.

The agencies that stand out are those that can clearly articulate who they help, the problems they solve and the value they create. When prospects can quickly understand why they should choose you, winning new business becomes a lot easier.

Relationships remain the competitive advantage

For all the discussion around AI, automation and changing delivery models, the fundamentals haven't changed.

Clients still value trust. They still value strong relationships. They still value people who listen, communicate well and genuinely care about their success.

Technology may change how agencies work. It won't replace the importance of understanding clients, challenging constructively and helping them navigate uncertainty.

The agencies that succeed over the next few years are unlikely to be those with the longest service lists or the loudest marketing.

They'll be the agencies that consistently demonstrate commercial understanding, bring fresh thinking, communicate proactively and become indispensable partners to their clients.

And that's good news, because every agency has the opportunity to do that.
